free onions and rosehips....

Year after year, we get so much of these onions from the
fields near our home, for free.
Sometime in September, the farmers do their seasonal
harvesting in the Marchfeld area outside Vienna.

The tractors would set the onions free from the soil, gather them in rows,
dry them  for about a couple of weeks before they are being
cleaned and delivered to the wholesalers in big crates.

When the farmers finished their harvest and the tractors are
out of the fields, we´re allowed to get the remaining ones that were not
included in the harvester.

Aside from the abundance of such harvest, I also got rosehips that I´m drying, also
from the same area. I´m trying this out for the first time to make tea...
I read that each berry is  full of  vitamins and could give relief to colds.
I´m anxious  to try the tea now!

We love to walk the dog here because it´s where nature is at its best.
Lily would while away enjoying the smell of the grass, wild trees
and bushes as other dogs do.

Sometimes, the farmers here change the crops they grow each season...
one time it´s the potatoes,  next.... the corn , rapes or sunflowers for
the oil production.

Lily exploring....

...and inspecting our free harvests

Rosehips for drying..... interesting to note that the drying process takes long.

My storage box full of onions is hidden in a cool dark place to make
them last longer. The dark place is necessary to prevent each
piece from getting green shoots, thereby leading each
onion to get spoiled!

I will tell more on the dried rosehips soon as they are ready...
perhaps, the rosehip tea will taste good!
Am anxious!

Thanks for visiting!

Sharing at :

a humid weekend and a WIP project....

It really is a lousy weekend , weatherwise.... very humid!
The weather in Vienna is constantly changing & unpredictable.

This kind of weather is a torture for those people who have circulatory
  or heart  problems...

It is very uncomfortable to be just sitting here and  there and sweat without even doing anything.
Despite the heat, I forced myself to do some things yesterday and today, just to finish-up something.

Actually, my usual time for the weekend is food buying on Fridays,  marathon
cooking as well as household chores on Saturdays.
Sunday is spent usually relaxing, read papers, do crafts and some spare time to
watch a good movie in the evening.

Yesterday, in between my cookings, I baked an almond poppy cupcakes for the afternoon snack
and enjoyed a cup of tea... At some point, I got bored with ice tea as I drink it almost everyday at work.

So, here´s that easy recipe ...

Easy Almond Poppy Cupcakes

Ingredients:
1 1/2 Cups all purpose Flour
1 1/2 tsps baking powder
 1/3 tsp. salt
1 cup powdered sugar or sweetener in powder form
 ( i.e.Stevia)
1/2 cup butter ( at room temperature)
2 large eggs
1/2 cups ground almond
3 tbsps. ground poppy seeds
1 cup buttermilk

Preparations:

Preheat the oven at 175 °C / 356°F.
Coat the holes of the muffin by brushing it with butter or margarine..

1.
Sift Flour together with the baking powder &  salt. Add the ground almond and the poppy seed, mix thoroughly.. set aside.

2.
In another container, put the electric mixer at high speed, beat the butter about 2 minutes until it´s fluffy, add the eggs, beating it properly until well blended.

Add half of the sugar alternately with half of the buttermilk, mix once more,  then add the rest of the sugar and then rest of  buttermilk. Mix well and add this to the flour mixture. Using a wooden spoon, mix everything , see to it that the dried ingredients are well coated and moist.

3.
Fill in  2/3 of the batter in each cupcake hole of the muffin tray....Bake for about 20 minutes or until cakes are done.
To make sure that the bottom of the cake is done, insert a toothpick in th center of the cake...if it comes out clean and dry...the cakes are done! Serve warm or cold.

And speaking of a WIP,
below is my work-in progress project..It´s going to be a night gown.

I used up 20 granny squares all in all.

The body part will be the embroidered cotton below and I would love to put cute buttons for the back closure..

Note: The finished nightgown will be featured
 here soon!

Thank you for reading this blog!
